Super Size Me, Swedish-style

This article in the Guardian today reports on a Swedish study that is replicating, under laboratory conditions, the 30-day, 6,000 calorie per day fast food diet that Morgan Spurlock undertook. The results are a little different to the film. Firstly, it's actually really difficult to eat that much unless you actually feel hungry. Secondly, people put on less weight than you'd expect because to some extent our metabolisms can increase to cope with the change (we just burn off more heat). Thirdly, none of the subjects experienced anything like the dramatic negative health effects that Spurlock did. Their livers adapted after three weeks and their cholesterol barely moved.
